Start with a good surface...

Surface preparation

As with any paint job, you must start with a smooth, clean surface. You must wash the walls and spackle any cracks or holes. Smooth the spackle with a wide putty knife. After the spackle is dry, sand lightly and brush down the walls. This is the most boring part.

Now you're ready to paint your "mortar". To get the look I wanted, I painted the wall with a pale taupe. Let the wall dry for at least 6-8 hours.
